The Children’s Grand Adventure

Mattie Jackson

Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 16

Mattie Jackson brought quite a lot home to Houston after her trip to The Children’s Grand Adventure.  She toted a story of rafting alongside a baby moose and its protective mother; countless photos; and perhaps best of all, two new friends, Eileen and Tom. The trio now shares regular movie nights, snowcapped memories and an alliance forged through the conquest of cancer, which for Mattie came in February of 2010. Today she aspires to a career in marine biology. It could be said that Mattie’s newfound friendships arose from a communal atmosphere that embraces all who attend the Grand Adventure. One story she tells typifies the experience. “Our group was hiking thousands of feet up in the Teton Range and one younger girl was falling behind,” she says. “We were cold and tired, but we encouraged her – and we made sure she saw how beautiful it was once you got to the top.”
